FORMULA #24
Kodak D-76 (1927)
(J. G. Capstaff)
This developer is good for low contrast and maximum shadow detail. The commercial prod-
uct, marketed by Kodak, is the world’s best-selling black-and-white developer.
Water at 125F/52C, 750.0 ml
Metol, 2.0 g
Sodium sulfi te, 100.0 g
Hydroquinone, 5.0 g
Borax, 2.0 g
Water to make 1.0 liter
Dilute 1:1. D-76 may be used undiluted, but there is no advantage in doing so. The negatives
while slightly fi ner grained do not exhibit the same degree of sharpness or tonal scale.
The negatives technique" FocalPress 1972г (кстати - 18е переиздание!)

In Formula 80 which represents Kodak D76, one
of the most popular fine grain developers of this type, borax
is added as an alkaU. Wherever borax is used in any developer,
the granular or crystallised quality should be used as these
are more easily soluble than the powder form which has the
tendency to float on the surface of the solution and is only
very slowly dissolved. If, in Formula 80 or similar formulae,
the borax is replaced by an equal weight of Kodalk, a some-
what more energetic developer is obtained allowing somewhat
shorter developing times. At the same developing time a little
higher contrast would be obtained while the grain size is
not noticeably aifected.

Original D-76 used 2.0g/L of borax as the buffering agent.
.....
DK-76 is a version of D-76 where the borax is substituted with sodium metaborate or "Kodalk."
